Over the course of his short life Franz Schubert composed more than 400 dances, including 250 waltzes. These are no simple improvised dances, but rather sublime and lyrical short pieces. Through endowing the dance with psychologism, turning it into a poetic depiction of mood, Schubert prefigures waltzes by Chopin, Glinka, and Tchaikovsky.

The painter Kseniia Van will speak about the life of women in old China; what limitations a patriarchal society imposed on women; and how they managed to get around the system and fulfill their potential in the important fields of science, art, or public activity, obtaining wide recognition.

According to his contemporaries, the artist would spend hours watching over his favorite plant both in the heat and rain, in sunshine as well as in moonlight. And then, in a blink of an eye, he would make a bamboo painting. This story gave a rise to a modern Chinese idiom “to have a bamboo at heart,” meaning that one has a perfect, well-thought-out plan created through careful observation and long-term reflection.     We can assure you that the exhibited artists chose the images for their drawings with the same love and care as Wen Tong did almost a thousand years ago.     The artists work in traditional Chinese genres and ancient techniques: painting in the styles of gongbi ‘meticulous brush’ and xieyi ‘sketching thoughts’ (‘freehand’), calligraphy on paper and in seal carving.     All three authors currently live in Ukraine but study with the bearers of the Chinese tradition both in China and abroad. They provide a unique modern interpretation of the established tradition by immersing into the flow of creative processes developed by generations of Chinese artists, and using archaic techniques with great respect.    At the same time, each of them in their own way contributes to the enrichment of our understanding of those old works of art kept in the collection of the Khanenko Museum. These pieces represent the elite art of China’s past, where painting and calligraphy have been more than just a profession or hobby: practicing these arts was a sign of virtue and self-perfection.      Unlike many Chinese artists who have mastered the language and techniques of contemporary art, Kseniya Wang, Stella Nedbayevska and Qi Shaoting give priority to the ancient customs of a distant country. For them, meditative nature of creativity and the complex challenges that the Chinese art poses for artists are much more important.

Edoardo Crisafulli (Ph.D., University College Dublin) has published extensively on Dante’s Comedy in English translation. His latest publication is an article on the relationship between Dante and Blake, the most famous illustrator of the Divine Comedy in British culture, published in the refereed journal «Dante e l‘arte» in 2021. The article focuses on Dante’s and Blake’s representations of Satan, the fallen angel.

З нагоди славетного ювілею митця Євген Громов презентує в Музеї Ханенків авторську панорамно-тематичну програму «Дмитро Бортнянський і його час», в рамках якої виконавець поєднає і дослідить клавірну музику надзвичайно близьких і стилістично споріднених авторів доби класицизму — трьох учнів легендарного Болонського педагога Джованні Батіста Мартіні, відомішого як Падре Мартіні: Й. Він з‘явився на світ у столиці Гетьманщини, головній резиденції гетьмана Кирила Розумовського, місті Глухові. Європеєць із блискучою музичною освітою, учень Б. Ґалуппі та падре Мартіні (у якого у той період в Болоньї навчався також юний Моцарт). Класицист Бортнянський основну частину зрілого життя провів далеко від Батьківщини — десятиліття прожив у Італїї (Венеція, Болонья, Рим, Неаполь), а з часу повернення до імперії у 28 років і до кінця власного життя — у Санкт-Петербурзі. Автор 6 опер та 45 духовних концертів, засновник традиції хорового багатоголосся та нового класичного типу циклічного хорового концерту, директор Придворної капели, дійсний статський радник Бортнянський створив також низку світських інструментальних композицій, серед яких Концертна симфонія, Концерт, Септет, Квінтет, Квартет, клавірні сонати… З нагоди ювілею славетного митця доби класицизму у рамках п’ятої програми концерту-лекції авторського сімейно-просвітницького музичного циклу «Рояль у дитячій» піаніст Євген Громов познайомить дітей та дорослих з клавірним доробком майстра у повному обсязі, що дійшов до наших днів.

During the fourth concert-lecture in the series “Grand Piano in the Nursery” for families, the well-known Ukrainian pianist Yevhen Gromov will introduce children and adults to the grand figure of the late baroque French composer Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). The musician will outline Rameau’s place in the history of European music as well as speak about the biography and musical style of the eminent Enlightenment composer.

У рамках п‘ятої програми концерту-лекції авторського сімейно-просвітницького музичного циклу «Рояль в дитячій» відомий український піаніст Євген Громов познайомить дітей та дорослих з клавірною творчістю трьох титанів музики, що з‘явилися на світ одного й того ж року, а саме 1685-го — Йогана Себастьяна Баха (1685-1750), Ґеорґа Фрідріха Генделя (1685-1759) та Джузеппе Доменіко Скарлатті (1685-1757). Протягом зустрічі музикант у повноті представить строкате жанрово-стилістичне розмаїття клавірного доробку геніальних творців, котре є кульмінаційним і одночасно завершаючим добу пізнього бароко, та в свою чергу слугує переходом до класицизму в музиці. Обговорюватимуться та звучатимуть вибрані мініатюри з «Книжечки Вільгельма Фрідемана Баха» Й. С. Баха, Сюїта №11 та Пасакалія Ґ. Ф. Генделя, Сонати [Токата, «Котяча фуга», Болеро, Пастораль] Д. Д. Скарлатті.

Згідно з китайською філософською категорією Вусін, світ твориться взаємодією п'яти першоелементів (дерева, вогню, землі, металу та води). Усі вони потрібні для виробництва кераміки і мали зв'язок з китайською алхімією. Внаслідок метаморфоз, що відбувались з глиною та мінералами під дією вогню, виходили речі, гідні статусу шедеврів. Посудини вабили око патьоками полив, візерунком тріщин, гармонійною єдністю форм та кольору. Невдовзі керамічний посуд став невід'ємною частиною дозвілля китайської культурної еліти, незмінним учасником китайського чайного дійства, об'єктом колекціонування. Про те, як кераміка в Китаї перетворилась з ординарного посуду на бренд, розповість Ольга Новікова – мистецтвознавиця, дослідниця китайської кераміки та порцеляни в Музеї Ханенків, авторка курсу «Мистецтво Сходу» в Культурнтму проекті, має низку публікацій, присвячених мистецтву китайської керамки та порцеляни. Дослідниця вивчає китайську мову та займається китайською каліграфією.

The Khanenko Mansion, built and decorated according to the principles of historicism, was consistent with the epoch’s general interest in world’s cultural heritage. One of many historicist interiors of the house, the Red Living Room was decorated in the neo-renaissance style. Painted panels by Wilhelm Kotarbinski became an integral part of the decoration. The project is curated by Oleksandra Sakorska, the researcher of the Khanenko Museum’s interiors.

The new Khanenko Museum’s exhibition dedicated to 18th-century art is an attempt to reject the stereotypical notion of the Enlightenment exclusively as the epoch of Sensibility. Due to the habitual association between the Enlightenment and rationalism, common sense and progress, the sensuous side of the era often gets overlooked. Nonetheless, it was the Enlightenment that, after centuries marked by distrust of human feelings, proclaimed the value of subjective perception and personal experience. The exhibition’s purpose is not to juxtapose sense and sensibility, but to demonstrate their inextricable unity in the Enlightenment era’s worldview. 32 prints, 35 porcelain items, fragments of textiles, miniature paintings, sculptures, Chinese porcelain, lacquerware and ivory carvings are displayed in two exhibition rooms. Many of them are presented to the public for the first time. Antique books – the 18th-century editions of fiction and scientific literature – from the repository of the museum’s library complement the exhibition. Among the project’s highlights are 100-million-year-old minerals and ammonite fossils provided by the Geological Museum at the Institute of Geology, National Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv.

Like this ancient culture itself, Andrii Aleksandrovych’s “Antique game” is inextricably connected to theatre and its backstage life, however it reaches deeper levels. The exhibition features the series of portraits “When were gods”, whose story Aleksandrovych tells in the commentary to each exhibit in the first-person point of view. “Every time before starting to work I try to discover or resolve a hidden mythologem. If there is none, I invent one”, says the artist. The project is curated by Kateryna Chueva, Director General, Curator of the ancient art collection in the Khanenko Museum.

For the last weekend of this summer, the Khanenko Museum and Soloist Ensemble “Blahovist” prepared an exquisite musical selection to be performed in the Khanenko Museum’s courtyard. The concert's program includes works by Alphonso Maria de Liguori, Dmyto Bortnianskyi, Luigi Luzzi, Yakiv Yatsynevych, Alexander Arkhangelsky, Mykola Leontovych, Sergei Rakhmaninov, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Romuald Twardowski, and many others. The Soloist Ensemble “Blahovist” has been performing since 1992. The artistic director of Soloist Ensemble “Blahovist”: people’s artist of Ukraine Tetiana Kumanovska. Conductors: Alla Rybak, Dmytro Bilyk, Olena Kumanovska.

Bartsch’s reproduction of drawings was often connected with his scholarly activities; he described and cataloged well-known collections and at the same time reproduced the best artworks. The exhibition “Adam Bartsch: scholar and artist” features his reproductive prints which often were more eminent than Bartsch’s original artworks. Bartsch curated the imperial print collection in Vienna. Study and systematization of the huge collection resulted in Bartsch’s magnum opus “Le peintre graveur”. The work comprised 21 volumes and contained short biographies of artists together with a catalogue of their prints, which was arranged based on techniques and subjects, included detailed descriptions, lists of various conditions as well as known old copies. In addition to this, Bartsch made separate catalogues of prints by Rembrandt, Guido Reni and his students, Lucas van Leyden, Antonie Waterloo, and his contemporary Martin von Molitor. Its scientific value is so high that it is still re-published, supplemented with new information. On the occasion of Adam von Bartsch’s 200th death anniversary, marked on 21th August, 2021, the Khanenko Museum exhibits selected artworks by the artist in its collection. Most of the prints are publicly presented for the first time. The project’s curator: Olena Shostak, Head of the Department of European Prints and Drawings Research. The exhibition will work from 20th August till 10th October.

Confined by endless prohibitions and requirements, Chinese women still found ways to express themselves and act not only as subjects but also as objects. Although Chinese culture remained male-dominated for thousands of years, many women of different social standing occasionally received their share of attention. The Chinese considered women more capable of self-sacrifice and sympathy, therefore they depicted merciful deities as females. Artists’ attention was also attracted by women who decisively rejected traditional life scenarios, pursued martial arts and bravely fought for justice. The majority of exhibits came from the collection of the Jaspars who lived in Beijing in the mid-20th century. The exhibition is curated by Marta Logvyn, the Khanenko Museum’s researcher of Chinese painting and graphic arts. The exhibition opens at 17:00 on 23 July and will work until 29 August, 2021. On the opening day, the entrance is free.

The project aims to make the Khanenko Museum’s exhibition more accessible for visually impaired people. In the course of the project we will produce: ✔️tactile copies of Asian art masterpieces. ✔️information plaques accompanying the copies. ✔️portable tactile copies of exhibits that will be used in educational events for visually impaired people. ✔️mnemoschemes of the Khanenko Museum’s premises. ✔️stands for the placement of stationary and portable tactile copies. All the products will be developed in accordance with the standards of Universal Design. We want visually impaired people to have a broader and more quality access to Ukraine’s most valuable world art collection. The exhibition is dedicated to the 300th birth anniversary of the eminent graphic artist, architect and archeologist Giovanni Piranesi. During the guided tour, we are going to discuss Piranesi’s approach to work thanks to which his depictions of ruins exude with such a deeply poetical, melancholic sound as well as the artist’s influence on his counterparts from the next centuries. Please note that guided tour groups cannot consist of more than five people. For that reason, tickets should be reserved in advance. We kindly ask you to put on a mask before entering the museum building and do not remove it during your whole stay. The exhibition finishes on December, 10, 2020.

The exhibition "Melancholy of Eternal Buildings" is dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding graphic artist, architect and archaeologis Giovanni Battista Piranesi. The collection of the Khanenko Museum preserves 3 priority Piranesi formats. The authenticity of these formats confirmed and insignificant technical and technological studies. Piranesi was the first artist who depict the ruins of such a deep poetic, melancholy sound. To emphasize the majesty and monumentality of ancient buildings, the artist used baroque compositions. For example, angular perspective, a view of the reduction of contracts, the location of human figures like that they create smaller compared to large buildings of the past. In his opinion, antiquity was better than modernity as its architecture and way of life. The Piranesis works influence on many masters of different countries and eras. His motifs, translated into the modern language, are also felt in the drawings of the famous Ukrainian artist Georgy Narbut. Such special feelings cause watercolors by Kyiv artists made in 1944. This is not the ruins of an ancient civilization, this is our city, which suffered greatly in World War II. Drawings by Ukrainian artists were provided for the exhibition by a partner of the Khanenko Museum - the National Art Museum of Ukraine (NAMU). В експозиції представлено лише ті живописні та графічні роботи Матвія Вайсберга, які могли б увійти до його власного «уявного музею». Цей термін належить французькому культурологу Андре Мальро, який вважав, що кожна епоха і кожна людина складає власний пантеон найкращих витворів мистецтва. Матвій збирає персональний «уявний музей» не віртуально, а з пензлем у руці. Особливий жанр своїх робіт, присвячених творчості старих майстрів, він офіційно визначає як «штудії», а неофіційно — «освідчення у коханні». Приблизно так, але кожен на свій манер, Рубенс і Мане вивчали Тіціана, а Пікассо і Бекон — Веласкеса. Однак діалог художника з класикою відбувається не тільки у режимі «штудій», вже знайомих завсідникам виставок галереї «Дукат». У Музеї Ханенків глядачам доведеться самим вирішувати, як називати його нові й досі ще ніде не представлені твори. Рефлексіями? Метафорами? Або якось інакше, — адже в них вкладено самопізнання майже п’яти століть олійного живопису, що безперервно змінювався, рефлексував, бунтував і заперечував сам себе, втім продовжувався і, як засвідчують картини Матвія Вайсберга, — далі буде. “Pierre Goudreaux’s painting is a real gem of the museum’s collection. We are happy that after seven years of hard work of all participants involved in the process, we can finally present this masterpiece to Kyiv residents and guests of the capital. The impartial position of the American side was especially important for us, as well as the fact that due to the norms of the United States legislation the painting was returned to the Ukrainian museum free of charge,” said Kateryna Chuyeva, director general of the Khanenko Museum. Currently, the canvas is exhibited at the Khanenko Museum on the exhibition “Donated by Vasyl Shchavynsky.” This means that until the 30th of August, everyone has the opportunity to see the rediscovered painting and learn the fascinating story of its return.

Технологічна експертиза творів мистецтва”, що відбудеться в рамках проекту “НА.МИ.СТ.О. – НАука. МИстецтво. СТудії. Освіта” #ЗаПідтримкиУКФ Де: Музей Ханенків (Терещенківська, 17, Азійська колекція) Коли: 22 жовтня 2019 року Техніко-технологічні дослідження сьогодні є невід’ємною складовою атрибуції творів мистецтва. Комплексна технологічна експертиза включає дослідження оптичними і фізико-хімічними методами, що дозволяють визначати технологічні особливості творів, зокрема, творів живопису, наприклад, ідентифікувати пігментний склад і в’язиво фарбового шару та ґрунту тощо. Сукупність отриманих результатів, у свою чергу, дає можливість встановити час створення предмету і уточнити низку його атрибутивних даних. Учасники семінару зможуть отримати базові теоретичні та практичні знання щодо сучасних методів техніко-технологічних досліджень, особливостей їх використання, переваг та слабких місць, а також інтерпретацій результатів та використання їх в атрибуції музейних предметів на прикладі творів європейського живопису з колекції Музею Ханенків. Програмою передбачені лекції від фахівців Бюро науково-технічної експертизи "Арт-лаб" та Музею Ханенків, демонстрації застосування окремих методів, огляд виставки за матеріалами проекту, а також презентація посібника за матеріалами проекту. We have been approaching this for a few years. The museum holds the most important collection of world art in Ukraine, collected by Kyiv patrons of art Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko. Therefore, it was important not only to create a new visual image of the museum that would "speak" about the Khanenko Museum of today and tomorrow, but also to reflect its history and spirit. This difficult task the museum has implemented with the team of the Projector School of Design. The topic of museum branding is extremely relevant and multilayered. That is why the teams of the Khanenko Museum and the Projector Design School have decided not only to present a new identity, but also to organize a branding workshop for everyone working in the cultural field.
